Alvin Singleton Celebrates 75

We send our warmest wishes to Alvin Singleton on the occasion of his 75th birthday on December 28. Singleton kicks off his birthday month with a performance of his recent work for concert band, Where the Good Sounds Live, at Drexel University on December 6. Dr. Wesley Broadnax conducts.

Where the Good Sounds Live premiered in 2014 with the University of Maryland Wind Ensemble led by Michael Votta. Co-commissioned by a consortium of twenty-three bands, the work was written in memory of Dr. Myron D. Moss, the distinguished Drexel University music program director and associate professor who passed away in 2012. Dr. Moss was a leading authority on African-American composers, specifically in the world of concert band music. Where the Good Sounds Live brings Singleton’s distinctive sonic imprint to the symphonic wind band world, with an extended fanfare that defies presumptions. This compelling piece takes musicians and audiences into a world unlike any other found in the band repertoire.

Upcoming Singleton birthday-season concerts include: a portrait concert on March 10 at Roulette (New York City) featuring performances of Secret Desire to be Black, Somehow We Can, Be Natural, Argoru I and IV, In My Own Skin, and Baked in the Cake with the Momenta Quartet and pianist Joseph Kubera; performances of Different River with Robert Spano leading the Atlanta Symphony on April 7 and 8; and the premiere of Prayer for tenor, chamber choir and ensemble as part of the Cincinnati May Festival on May 22.
