Alexander Zhurbin's Love's Metamorphosis Debuts in Moscow

Acclaimed Russian composer Alexander Zhurbin sees the world premiere of his new opera Love’s Metamorphosis at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre on May 25, in a production directed by Tatiana Mitkaleva and conducted by Felix Korobov and Vyacheslav Volich.

Love’s Metamorphosis is a triple bill opera encapsulating the lives, loves and destinies of three historic women known more commonly by their association with the famous men whom they loved: Alma Mahler (wife of Gustav Mahler), Ulrike von Levetzow (whose relationship with Goethe inspired many great verses) and Lou Andreas-Salomé (a muse to Neitzsche, Freud, Rilke and many others).

Though based on primary evidence from letters, memoirs, and historical documents, Love’s Metamorphosis is truly an historical fiction, expounding on the lives of the three central characters. Zhurbin comments:

Through Love’s Metamorphosis, we show Goethe, sage and mournful, in love with the young and tender maiden Ulrike; Mahler, suffering and loving his wife Alma and betrayed by her; mysterious and beautiful Lou Andreas-Salomé who wasn’t alien to any experiments in the fields of love.

The production runs through June 30. For more information, visit stanmus.com.
