Albany Records Releases Premiere Recording of Kamran Ince's <em>Judgment of Midas</em>

This month, Albany Records released the first commercial recording of Kamran Ince’s opera Judgment of Midas. Performed by Milwaukee’s Present Music, in collaboration with Milwaukee Opera Theatre, the recording features tenor Matthew DiBattista, mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer, baritone Gregory Gerbrandt, soprano Jennifer Goltz, bass Mikhail Svetlov and bass-baritone Phillip Horst, conducted by the composer.

Judgment of Midas was commissioned by Crawford Greenewalt, Jr. III to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sardis excavations in Turkey. The work received its concert premiere by Present Music in 2013. Loosely based on Ovid’s mythical drama Metamorphoses with a libretto by Miriam Seidel, the opera details the epic musical battle that occurred between the gods Pan and Apollo. Ince comments:

Two stories interweave around the ancient city of Sardis. A pair of lovers—a “serious” composer and a pop singer, visiting the ruins of Sardis as tourists—fall into the past and find themselves pulled into a mythic music contest said to have happened near there, between the gods Apollo and Pan, and witnessed by a post-golden touch King Midas. All three—Midas, Theo and Franny—find themselves transformed by the contest and its aftermath; the lovers learn to hear, and to hear each other, in a new way.
