A Treasure Trove of Kurt Weill Centennials
Jan. 30, 2026
Kurt Weill burst onto the German opera scene with the premiere of Der Protagonist in Dresden on March 27, 1926. One of that season’s most visible triumphs, it was Weill’s first big success as a composer of music theater. As the calendar turns toward the second half of the decade, a progression of important centenaries of Weill premieres will unfold. Here are some of the historical moments to be marked:
Royal Palace (March 2, 1927, Berlin, Staatsoper Platz der Republik)
Mahagonny Songspiel (July 17, 1927, Baden-Baden, Deutsches Kammermusikfest)
Die Dreigroschenoper (August 31, 1928, Berlin, Theater am Schiffbauerdamm)
Kleine Dreigroschenmusik (February 7, 1929, Preussisches Staatskapelle)
Das Berliner Requiem (May 22, 1929, Radio Frankfurt)
Happy End (September 2, 1929, Berlin, Theater am Schiffbauerdamm)
Der Lindberghflug (December 5, 1929, Berlin, Krolloper)
Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (March 9, 1930, Leipzig, Städtisches Theater)
Der Jasager (June 24, 1930, Berlin, Zentralinstitut für Erziehung und Unterricht)
Die Bürgschaft (March 10, 1932, Berlin, Städtische Oper)
Der Silbersee (February 18, 1933, Leipzig, Altes Theater)
In these same coming years, notable premieres from Weill’s American career will reach their eightieth anniversaries: Street Scene (January 9, 2027), Down in the Valley (July 15, 2028), Love Life (October 7, 2028), Lost in the Stars (October 30, 2029).
