World Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's <em>Upstream</em> with Callithumpian Consort

The Callithumpian Consort presents a concert of works by Chaya Czernowin on October 31, including the world premiere of Slow Summer Stay III: Upstream. The concert takes place at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. On October 29, Stephen Drury, director of the Callithumpian Consort, presents a preview of Czernowin’s music as part of the ensemble’s “Open For’m” series. The “For’m” takes place at the New England Conservatory and provides a public rehearsal and discussion between composer, ensemble and audience.

Upstream, the final work in Czernowin’s Slow Summer Stay triptych, was commissioned by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation for Music for the Callithumpian Consort. Of the piece, Czernowin notes:

Streams and Lakes are written for the same mixed octet and use mostly the same material, which is all about movement (Streams) or stillness (Lakes) in and out of the passage of time. The materials are organized so differently that they shift their meaning in this sense when they move from Lakes to Streams. The culmination of the series is in the piece Upstream. This is a piece for two octets in which the two pieces are placed over each other so that the simultaneous/non-simultaneous presentation and cueing of the two pieces creates a loose palindromic canon.

The program also includes Czernowin’s Afatsim, Drift, and fardanceCLOSE alongside works by Lachenmann, Scelsi and Feldman.
