Winnipeg Symphony Presents Jonny Greenwood&rsquo;s Suite from <em>There Will Be Blood</em>

February 1 marked the North American premiere of English composer Jonny Greenwood’s suite from the critically acclaimed film score to Paul Thomas Anderson’s film There Will Be Blood. Presented as part of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival, the Suite from There Will Be Blood joins Greenwood’s other recent compositions such as Popcorn Superhet Receiver (2005), 48 Responses to Polymorphia (2011) and Doghouse (2010) in the composers expanding catalogue of revered orchestral works.

On hearing the score to There Will Be Blood, Alex Ross of The New Yorker writes:

This music comes from a Greenwood piece called Popcorn Superhet Receiver, and, although it wasn’t composed for the film, it supplies a precise metaphor for the central character. Disembodied major triads rise through the harmonic haze, like mirages on the barren terrain outside [central character Daniel] Plainview’s shaft. The music is at once terrifying and enrapturing, alien and intimate.

The concert, led by Alexander Mickelthwate, took place at Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg on Friday, February 1 and included Steve Reich’s biblically inspired Tehillim and Gareth Farr’s percussion concerto, Hikoi.
