Walden Chamber Players Premiere Andrew Norman's <em>Music in Circles II</em>

Andrew Norman's first premiere of the 2012/13 season comes at the hands of the Walden Chamber Players as they debut the composers' new clarinet quartet, Music in Circles II, on October 28 at the Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts. Written for clarinet, violin, viola and cello, the new piece is a fascinating expansion of the composer’s recent explorations with sound and, specifically, the subtle transformation of sound as an overall structural element in the composition of a work.

Norman takes up bi-coastal composer residencies this season, teaming up with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.  As a warm up to the world premiere of a new work in Los Angeles later this season, LACO, under Jeffrey Kahane, performs Norman’s The Great Swiftness on October 6. Commissioned by the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, Norman’s hometown orchestra, the piece is composed in the spirit of a fanfare and inspired by the Alexander Calder sculpture La Grande Vitesse in downtown Grand Rapids. Speaking of Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra also presents a performance of Norman’s music on October 14 with Gran Turismo, Norman’s ecstatic ensemble work for eight violins.
