Victoria Borisova-Ollas Portrait Festival in Stockholm

From April 18 through 21, Stockholm celebrates composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas with “Tonsättarweekend,” a composer portrait series featuring her orchestral and chamber music. The series culminates with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s world premiere of the composer’s new work Creation of the Hymn, conducted by Mikael Bartosch. The 15-minute work is scored for string orchestra and was commissioned by the Stockholm Concert Hall Foundation. "I hope,” Borisova-Ollas shares, “it will be a good introduction to my music: the program represents a range of my work composed over the last 15 years."

Other orchestral works featured at “Tonsättarweekend” include Angelus, Open Ground, Symphony No. 1, and Wunderbare Leiden (for two pianos and orchestra) performed by the Kungliga Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Nikolai Alexeev. Borisova-Ollas’ chamber pieces include Colors of Autumn, Creation of the Hymn (original string quartet version), Djurgården Tales (for two pianos), „...im Klosterhofe”, and 7 Singing Butterflies.

Born in Vladivostok, Russia, Borisova-Ollas attended the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. After arriving in Sweden in 1992, she continued her studies at the Royal College of Music and the Malmö Academy. In 1998, her breakthrough came with the work Wings of the Wind being recognized by Britain’s Masterprize International Competition. In 2005, Borisova-Ollas’ Symphony No. 1 received an award from the Royal Swedish Academy, her piece The Ground Beneath Her Feet won the 2008 Swedish Music Publishers Association Award, and in 2009, the composer received the Hilding Rosenberg Prize of the Swedish Composers’ Association. In 2011, Borisova-Ollas became the first woman to win the Swedish Royal Academy of Music’s Christ Johnson Prize for Composition for her clarinet concerto Golden Dances of the Pharaohs.
