US Premiere of Jonny Greenwood's <em>Suite from 'There Will Be Blood'</em> at Mannes College

On October 31, David Hayes leads the Mannes College Orchestra in the US premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Suite from ‘There Will Be Blood’. The work comprises six movements from Greenwood’s acclaimed soundtrack to the 2007 Academy Award-winning film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The suite received its world premiere at the 2012 Holland Festival in a performance by André de Ridder and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

Jonny Greenwood is best known for his work as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriting contributor to the iconic alt-rock band Radiohead. There Will Be Blood represents his second effort as a film composer following the score for Bodysong in 2003. The suite clearly exemplifies his affinity for the 20th-century avant-garde, particularly the orchestral masterpieces of Penderecki, Messaien, and Ligeti; the composer sites the early works of Penderecki, such as Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, as a monumental influence in his compositional style.

The program, which takes place at New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, also features works by Karel Husa and Igor Stravinsky.
