Thomas Adès Conducts <em>In Seven Days</em> at Boston Symphony Orchestra

Coming on the heels of the acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut of his opera The Tempest, Thomas Adès travels up the Eastern seaboard to Boston where he leads three performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a program featuring his piano concerto In Seven Days, November 15, 16 and 17. Composed as a multimedia work set to video installation by Israeli video artist Tal Rosner, In Seven Days is a musical and visual retelling of the Genesis story of creation that takes listeners on a mesmerizing journey from chaos to creation. The performances in Boston feature the music only, without the visual component. The composer comments:

This piece is a video-ballet in seven movements, played continuously. The piece follows the story of creation…The story is set as a set of variations, reflecting the two-part structure of the story: Days 1, 2, and 3 are complemented by Days 4, 5, and 6. In Day 7 the theme is presented in its simplest form. The visuals also tell the story in an abstract way, using footage and photographs from the two places equally responsible for the work’s commission: Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, and the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, and their immediate surroundings.


In Seven Days was commissioned by the Southbank Centre and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and premiered in 2008 with soloist Nicholas Hodges and the London Sinfonietta. The program in Boston also features Sibelius' Luonnotar, Symphony No. 6 and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1.
