Symphony Space Opens 2013/14 Season with Kurt Weill Celebration

New York’s Symphony Space opens its 2013-14 season on October 7 with an all-Weill orchestra concert to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of the hit musical One Touch of Venus. Hosted by Ted Chapin, the evening will highlight songs from Venus as well as favorites from other Weill shows, including Street Scene, Lady in the Dark, Love Life, and Lost in the Stars. The starry cast features Melissa Errico, Brent Barrett, Judy Blazer, and Ron Raines alongside Lotte Lenya Competition winners Richard Todd Adams, Douglas Carpenter, Cooper Grodin, Justin Hopkins, Zachary James, Analisa Leaming, Jacob Keith Watson, and Maren Weinberger. Weill specialist James Holmes, who conducted a full production of Venus at England’s Opera North in 2004, music directs, and Richard Jay-Alexander directs.

Launching Mary Martin into stardom in 1943, One Touch of Venus pokes lighthearted fun at modern love and American suburban values. With a lush score by Weill, witty, urbane lyrics by Ogden Nash, and a delightfully risqué book by Nash and fellow New Yorker humorist S.J. Perelman, One Touch of Venus has been called in recent years “a musical of genuine sparkle and beauty” (The Times) and “adelight. Anyone looking for a sophisticated musical to revive, with a classy script and an equally classy score, need look no further” (Opera News).
