Robert Beaser

  • Manhattan Roll continues its tour of 25 university wind ensembles across the US with performances at University of Southern California (September 25), Michigan State University (October 25), Columbus State University (December, 2011), Georgia State University and many more.
  • The University of Arizona School of Music presents a festival of the music of Ligeti, Bartok and Beaser from October 21 through 28. Beaser appears as composer-in-residence and his orchestra works Double Chorus and Ground “O” among others are performed.

Douglas J. Cuomo

  • Maya Beiser performs Only Breath, for cello and electronics, as part of her solo show Provenance at UCLA's Royce Hall on the UCLA Live series.

John Duffy

  • Duffy’s music drama David sees workshop readings in Norfolk, Virginia in Spring of 2012.

Lee Hoiby

  • A consortia of university and professional opera companies is currently in formation for the world premiere of Lee Hoiby’s final opera, a setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, in the 2012/13 season.

Kamran Ince

  • Ince’s new work for two ensembles premieres in Dublin in the summer of 2012, featuring artists from the Yurodny (Dublin) and Hezarfen (Istanbul) ensembles and commissioned by the Arts Council of Ireland.
  • The opera program at the University of Memphis previews Judgment of Midas with staged excerpts on April 22.  The premiere of Judgment of Midas, Ince’s first opera, is scheduled for September, 2012, in Milwaukee, in a joint production between Florentine Opera and Present Music.
  • New cello and piano arrangements of Ince’s chamber works Drawings and Tracing debut at the Borusan Art House of Istanbul in March with cellist Rahsan Apay and Kamran Ince on piano.

Bruce MacCombie

  • The Albany Symphony Orchestra performs Chelsea Tango on December 17, conducted by David Alan Miller.

Andrew Norman

  • Orpheus Chamber Orchestra premieres Norman’s new work as part of the Project 440 commission on December 2 in Easton, PA, with an encore performance on December 3 at Carnegie Hall.
  • The Brooklyn Philharmonic, led by Alan Pierson, presents their Beethoven Remix Project on June 9. Andrew Norman will orchestrate a winning DJ's remix of the final movement of Beethoven's Third Symphony. Mos Def joins the program, which takes place at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza.
  • A new septet premieres with the Ensemble Berlin in the summer of 2012 at the Salzburg Festival.
  • The Ensemble ACJW premieres a collaborative work composed by Norman, Robert Honstein, Christopher Cerrone and Jacob Cooper on February 10 at Skidmore College and February 14 at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. Each composer contributes a movement of the new piece.

Stephen Paulus

  • September 11 saw the world premiere of Prayers and Remembrances with the Tucson Chamber Artists choir and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, led by Eric Holden.
  • TimePiece, co-written with Greg Paulus, debuts on September 29, 30 and October 1 with the Minnesota Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä and featuring the jazz ensemble Fat Kid Wednesdays.
  • Paulus' new opera in one act, The Shoemaker, premieres on April 3 at the Manhattan School of Music. The work features a libretto by Michael Dennis Browne and the production is directed by Kent Tritle.
  • Philip Brunelle leads the Plymouth Music Choir and Orchestra in five performances of the Christmas cantata So Hallow'd Is the Time on the Plymouth Music Series in December.
  • To Be Certain of the Dawn, a holocaust oratorio, premiers in Madison, Wisconsin at the Regional ACDA Convention in February, conducted by Lee Nelson.

Tobias Picker

  • Pittsburgh’s Microscopic Opera Company presents Fantastic Mr. Fox in its chamber ensemble arrangement with four performances from September 15 through 18. Andres Cladera conducts and Erica Olden directs the production at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Columbia University’s Miller Theatre opens its 2011/12 Composer Portrait series with a portrait of Tobias Picker on October 6. The program features performances by the Brentano String Quartet, pianist Sarah Rothenberg and conductor Frederic Chaslin and includes Picker’s piano concerto Keys to the City, Rhapsody for violin and piano, select arias from his operas and the New York premiere of Piano Quintet.

Bernard Rands

  • Danza Petrificada is featured in performances by the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic at the Benedum Theatre in Pittsburgh on March 31 and at Carnegie Hall (Carnegie Mellon’s Centennial Anniversary Concert) on April 2 conducted by Ronald Zollman.
  • Gloria Cheng performs the US premiere of Rands’ Preludes for piano at the Colburn School of Music.
  • The Slee Sinfonietta, led by Gil Rose, performs “now again”- fragments from Sappho, for mezzo-soprano and ensemble in Buffalo, NY on November 1.
  • The Steans Institute Quartet tours Rands’ String Quartet No. 2 to Boston (March 18, Gardner Museum), Stamford, Connecticut (April 1), New York (Merkin Concert Hall, April 3), and Chicago (The Loft, April 6 and at Ravinia, April 7).
  • Gerard Schwarz returns to The Seattle Symphony to lead a performance of Adieu on May 18.
  • The Contemporary Music Ensemble of California College presents Canti del Sole, in its chamber version, on November 30 at Northwestern University’s Picker-Staiger Concert Hall.

Joseph Schwantner

  • On November 11 Schwantner’s Percussion Concerto No. 2, for percussion section, timpani and orchestra, debuts at the Percussive Arts Society Conference in Indianapolis performed by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hans Graf.
  • Schwantner holds residencies this season at Music of the 21st Century on February 14-18 at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, and at Ohio State University Contemporary Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio on April 23 through 27.
  • University of Colorado-Boulder’s Pendulum New Music ensemble presents Joseph Schwantner’s  ensemble work Sparrows on September 28 in Boulder’s Macky Auditorium.
  • Robert Spano leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra through Schwantner’s New Morning for the World, a stirring setting of the words of Martin Luther King Jr., on January 12.
  • Dream Drapery-Five Songs on Thoreau, for contralto and string quartet, commissioned by the Galax Quartet premieres in April in Indianapolis.

Howard Shore

  • Shore’s new work Mythic Gardens, a concerto for cello and orchestra, premieres with the American Symphony Orchestra on April 27 at Bard College, led by Leon Botstein and featuring Sophie Shao.
  • Of Myth and Rings-Shore and Wagner: On October 8 in Florence, Kentucky, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra performs selections from Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings scores alongside selections from Richard Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung.
  • Ludwig Wicki leads the Munich Symphony Orchestra on a tour of Shore’s award-winning Fellowship of the Ring-Live to Projection across the US this season with performances in Phoenix (October 12), San Diego (October 13), Anaheim (October 15), Portland (October 18), Seattle (October 19), Fresno (October 21) Oakland (October 22) and Sacramento (October 23).
  • The Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, with Ludwig Wicki, performs the Return of the King-Live toProjection on February 17 and 18.
  • Across the Atlantic, the RTE Concert Orchestra under David Brophy performs Fellowship of the Ring on November 18 and 19, and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra performs the Lord of the Rings Symphony on February 16 and 17.

Alvin Singleton

  • Singleton’s new orchestral work debuts with Robert Spano and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on May 10, 11 and 12.
  • Singleton’s bombastic fanfare After Fallen Crumbs is featured by the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra on February 16, 17 and 18.
  • The neoPhonia New Music Ensemble of Georgia State University performs Jasper Drag on October 4 at Kopleff Recital Hall.
  • Teresa McCollough debuts In My Own Skin, a new work for solo piano, at Roulette in Brooklyn on November 17.
  • Philadelphia new music organization Astral Artists present Almost A Boogie on February 18 in Philadelphia.

Morton Subotnick

  • Members of the San Francisco Symphony premiere Jacobs Room: Monodrama on March 11, featuring Joan La Barbara on the orchestra’s American Mavericks series.
  • Subotnick performs A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur: Revisited, with visuals by Tony Martin, at Roulette on September 22 on the Interpretations series.
  • Subotnick performs Silver Apples of the Moon and A Sky of Cloudless Sulphur: Revisited with visuals by Lillevan at Mexico City’s Radar Festival.
  • Album release party on November 9 at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on the occasion of the release of Mode Records’ third volume of electronic works by Subotnick. The performance includes Until Spring: Revisited and features visuals by Sue Costabile. Gavin Russom opens the program.

Stewart Wallace

  • This fall Stewart Wallace’s When You Were a Baby sees recording sessions at Sky Walker Sound, California. The session performers include mezzo-soprano Zheng Cao, soprano Lisa Delan, cellist Matt Haimovitz and his cello ensemble Uccello. An adaptation of the Bowl Aria from Wallace’s opera The Bonesetter’s Daughter, the piece also features a bawu (Chinese flute), performed by Wu Tong, and ban (Chinese percussion instrument), performed by Li Zhonghua.
