Ryan Wigglesworth Appointed Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow at The Cleveland Orchestra
Apr. 01, 2013

With the announcement of The Cleveland Orchestra’s 2013-14 season, we are thrilled to note the selection of Schott composer Ryan Wigglesworth as the orchestra's next Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow. Beginning his two-year post in September 2013, Wigglesworth will compose a new work for The Cleveland Orchestra to be premiered in the 2014-15 season and the US premiere of his orchestral work Sternenfall will be conducted by Franz Welser-Möst in March 2014. The residency is punctuated by multiple rehearsals, master classes and educational outreach activities in the Northeast Ohio community led by Wigglesworth.
Current Artist-in-Association with the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, Wigglesworth has experienced several career highlights recently including his appointment as Composer-in-Residence at the English National Opera, and his orchestral song cycle Augenlieder winning the vocal prize of the 2010 British Composer Awards. Sternenfall, written for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and premiered under the composer’s direction in February 2008, firmly established Wigglesworth as one of the leading composers of his generation. Two further works for the BBCSO immediately followed: TheGenesis of Secrecy, commissioned by the BBC Proms and premiered in August 2009 conducted by Sir Andrew Davis; and Augenlieder, an orchestral song cycle composed for soprano Claire Booth on texts by Rimbaud, Schiele, Berryman and Browning, which was premiered at the Barbican in November 2009 with the composer conducting. Current projects include a song cycle for tenor Mark Padmore, an orchestral work to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth for the Aldeburgh Festival, and a full-scale opera for the English National Opera.
