Happy Birthday, Rodion Shchedrin!

We offer sincere congratulations to our great Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin who celebrates his 80th  birthday on December 16, wishing him above all good health and great success in all of his future endeavors! The composer’s anniversary year has already been emphatically marked by the premiere of the dramatic scene for soprano and orchestra Cleopatra and the Snake at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival with Mojca Erdmann and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. In this work, Shchedrin has set texts from Shakespeare’s tragedy Antony and Cleopatra in the inspired Russian translation by his compatriot Boris Pasternak.

Schott is currently preparing piano reductions of Cleopatra and the Snake and Shchedrin’s large-scale choral work The Sealed Angel. A new catalogue of his works published by Schott (KAT 95-99) has also been released on the occasion of the composer's 80th birthday and can be ordered free of charge online.

Shchedrin received particular congratulations from his friend and colleague Mariss Jansons who conducted the Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in the first performance of Shchedrin's Beethoven's Heiligenstädter Testament in 2008. Jansons writes:

From the bottom of my heart I want to congratulate the great composer, one of the most interesting of our time, on the occasion of his birthday! It is always a true pleasure performing his works and I wish him energy and inspiration to continue writing new works for many years to come.
