Richard Wagner Bicentenary

Richard Wagner was born on May 22, 1813, and as we turn the calendar to May we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The history of the Wagner legacy under the Schott banner is an exalted one: Schott has been the proud home of Wagner’s stage works since 1859, renowned as the leading publisher of Wagner editions, and continues to build on its well spring of over 800 Wagner publications of original works, versions, and arrangements to date.

Ubiquitous in the classical music world, performances of Wagner’s oeuvre punctuate the season in even more widespread fashion this year, including the US premiere of the newly completed 1842 edition of Der fliegende Holländer at Boston Lyric Opera just last month. As a compliment to the year’s bicentennial productions, Schott Music's new Richard Wagner Complete Edition makes available for the first time the complete output of Richard Wagner in critical form. In addition to the now reliable and scholarly engravings of Wagner’s most beloved works, the Complete Edition also makes available numerous hitherto unknown, unpublished, and alternate versions of his works. To help conductors, programmers and producers navigate the edition, a new Richard Wagner: Performance Materials and Versions brochure is now available from Schott. The brochure serves as an essential guide to information on new orchestral material and piano reductions of Wagner’s major operas, suggestions for concert programming with operatic excerpts and concert works, as well as a detailed listing of works by contemporary composers that reference Wagner's music. Learn more on the Complete Edition at www.schott-music.com.

Schott has also published a new guide to our complete Wagner catalogue, including all Complete Edition, Edition Schott, book, solo, chamber, orchestral and stage publications. The promotional catalogue is free and can be viewed online at www.schott-music.com/wagner2013. In addition, Schott Music's performance materials for Lohengrin as well as our Tannhäuser vocal score have received two German Music Edition Awards in the category of Best Edition from the German Music Publishers Association. Special congratulations are in order for director of Wagner performance materials, Christian Hoesch, and editor of our vocal score series, Andreas Krause.

This year’s May/June issue of the Schott Aktuell, Schott Music’s bimonthly journal of news and events around the globe, also focuses on the Richard Wagner Complete Edition. This issue serves as an introduction to the Complete Edition offering further insight into the editorial decisions relating to rehearsal marks, cues, clefs, transpositions, page turns, over all format and much more.
