<em>The OPERA America Songbook</em> Now Available from Schott Music

Schott Music is proud to announce the publication of TheOPERA America Songbook, a collection of 47 new songs from leading American composers edited by Scott Wollschleger, Christopher Cerrone and Juan Pablo Contreras. The songbook was commissioned by OPERA America in honor of the opening of the National Opera Center in New York this month and marks the first commission from OPERA America.

The participating composers were tasked with creating new songs based on themes of the excitement of new beginnings and the joy of singing, setting an eclectic range of texts from Shakespeare, Dickinson, letters of Verdi, contemporary librettists Mark Campbell, Royce Vavrek, Donna DiNovelli, and the composers themselves. Selections from The OPERA America Songbook were performed during the National Opera Center opening week celebrations in September, and the entire cycle will be performed at the Center throughout the 2012/13 season. OPERA America President and CEO Marc A. Scorca comments:

OPERA America has always been firmly committed to the development of new opera works, which is why the opening of the National Opera Center was the perfect occasion to commission our own celebration of vocal music. We decided to commission a song cycle to include as many of the talented composers in our circle as possible, and to show that commissioning projects can take many forms beyond the traditional full opera. We are truly honored and touched to see how many composers eagerly embraced this project, making it richer and more varied than we could have predicted.
