OPERA America Salon Series Presents <em>An Evening with Douglas J. Cuomo</em>

OPERA America’s innovative Salon Series recently featured An Evening With Douglas J. Cuomo. The event on March 5 featured scenes from Cuomo's new opera Doubt, fresh off of its successful premiere run at Minnesota Opera, his first opera Arjuna's Dilemma, and a new work in development, Winter's Journey. The performances were followed by in depth discussion with the composer about the development of Doubt and his multi-faceted musical career, led by OPERA America President and CEO Marc A. Scorca.

Based on the Tony Award-winning play by John Patrick Shanley, who also wrote the libretto, Doubt completed its premiere run in St. Paul, Minnesota on February 3 starring Christine Brewer, Denyce Graves, Matthew Worth and Adriana Zabala in principal roles. The production, directed by Kevin Newbury and conducted by Christopher Franklin, opened to widespread critical and popular acclaim:

Doubt was commissioned by Minnesota Opera as part of the company’s New Works Initiative, a landmark program designed to invigorate the operatic repertoire with an infusion of contemporary works. The opera’s development was assisted by workshops produced by the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music’s Opera Fusion: New Works program. Doubt marked the first selection of Opera Fusion, chosen from a pool of 50 entrants.

An Evening with Douglas J. Cuomo took place at OPERA America's new state-of-the-art facility, the National Opera Center in Manhattan, and featured performances by soprano Lauren Flanigan, baritone Michael Chioldi and mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer accompanied by Frank London on trumpet, Christopher Cooley on piano, and Mr. Cuomo himself on guitar and electronics.
