Nishat Khan's <em>The Gate of the Moon</em> Premieres at the 2013 Proms

Sitar virtuoso Nishat Khan’s recent concerto for sitar and orchestra, The Gate of the Moon, received its world premiere at the 2013 Proms to great acclaim. The performance, which took place August 12, featured the composer as soloist accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under the direction of David Atherton. Commissioned by the BBC, the work explores intimate and novel relationships between the soloist and ensemble with an elaborate fushion of traditional Eastern and Western compositional styles. Khan elaborates:

This concerto is a journey through my life experiences through particular melodies, lines, and phrases. It is a commemoration of the treasures of western classical music that rings in my psyche and my soul; the work of masters I have heard while living, in various periods of my life, in Europe.

Alexandra Coghlan of 'The Arts Desk' reviews The Gate of the Moon:

The work dares to grow slowly, coiling outwards and upwards from a double bass ostinato that undulates through much of the first movement, which accumulates rather than develops its motifs. It’s all mesmerically simple, rocking the listener back and forth until the sitar dances into the fray in a jangle of metallic brilliance.
