New York Philharmonic's Biennial and CONTACT! Series to Feature Eötvös, Pintscher, Benjamin, Staud, Hosokawa, Wigglesworth and More

With the much-anticipated announcement of the New York Philharmonic’s inaugural Biennial in 2014 and next season’s CONTACT! series, we are pleased to note the music of several composers from the Schott/EAM family among the incredible array of events and festivities. Alan Gilbert will conduct the New York Philharmonic in the New York premiere of Peter Eötvös’s violin concerto DoReMi with Midori at Avery Fisher Hall. Matthias Pintshcer leads the New York Philharmonic in the New York premiere of his cello concerto Reflections on Narcissus, featuring Alisa Weilerstein, and “CONTACT! At the Biennial,” sees Matthias Pintscher conducting “Beyond Recall,” a program devoted to the US premieres of music inspired by sculptures selected for the Salzburg Art Project. The program includes works by Johannes Maria Staud on "Caldera" by Anthony Cragg, Vykintas Baltakas on "Beyond Recall" by Brigitte Kowanz, and Jay Schwartz on "Mozart-Eine Hommage" by Markus Lüpertz. “Beyond Recall” is being co-produced by New York's Museum of Modern Art.

The Biennial also features two performances by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL) conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado. The OSL presents “Circles of Influence: Pierre Boulez” at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center, featuring Boulez’s Memoriale (… explosante-fixe…Originel) and Une page d’ephemeride, as well as the US premiere of Ostinato funebre by Heinz Holliger. The second installment of this series by the OSL, “Circles of Influence: George Benjamin,” features the New York premieres of Benjamin’s Upon Silence and Octet, and the US premieres of Colin Matthews’s Grand Barcarolle and Ryan Wigglesworth’s A First Book of Inventions.

Lincoln Center and the Biennial will jointly present pianist Marino Formenti in a solo recital of music by Liszt juxtaposed with works by modern masters including György Ligeti, Wolfgang Rihm, Luciano Berio, Morton Feldman and György Kurtag.

Finally, Gotham Chamber Opera presents The Raven, Toshio Hosokawa’s haunting chamber opera reimagining the Hawthorne tale, at John Jay College's Gerald W. Lynch Theater. The production is staged and choreographed by Luca Veggetti, narrated by Fredrika Brillembourg, and conducted by Neal Goren.
