New Chamber Works from Hannah Lash

Two new chamber works by Hannah Lash see their world premieres on March 28: Secrets, for trumpet and electronics, at The Stone in Manhattan’s Lower East Side; and Violations, for ensemble, at Yale University’s Sprague Hall.

New York-based trumpeter and loadbang member Andy Kozar performs Secrets, a work that explores tambour and rhythm using electronics to both embellish and magnify the overall acoustic effects of the instrument. Written in three movements, Secrets alternates the characteristics of electronic and live sound to display a constantly variant relationship between the two. Lash speaks about the piece:

In the first movement, the tape part begins its role as an enhancement of the live sound, extending where it is physically impossible for a live trumpet to extend without breathing, broadening the live instrument’s range, and shadowing the trumpet like an alter ego.

Violations evolved out of the composer’s personal trauma of having her computer stolen. Lash uses the piece to reconcile her own feelings of rage with the plight of others who feel powerless and devalued in society. She writes:

Negativity and anger are powerful and cyclic forces. When we feel violated, we feel the need to make others suffer in some way, as we have suffered.  Violations is my way of looking closely at human suffering, and in my own way, to exorcise the anger and blame I felt after my experience of losing so much of my creative work.

Secrets debuts Thursday, March 28 at The Stone in New York City and the curtain rises on Violations at the Yale School of Music’s Sprague Hall. For more concert information visit www.thestonenyc.com and music.yale.edu.
