Music Institute of Chicago Plays Music from <em>The Yellow Shark</em> Composed by Frank Zappa; Los Angeles Philharmonic Announces <em>200 MOTELS</em> World Premiere

The acclaimed Four Score Festival’s final concert of the 2013 season features works selected from Frank Zappa’s classic album, The Yellow Shark. Presented by the Music Institute of Chicago, the festival highlights these works in the festival’s program titled “Power to the People,” and includes The Dog Breath Variations/Uncle Meat, The Girl in the Magnesium Dress, Be-Bop Tango, Ruth is Sleeping, Get Whitey, and G-Spot Tornado.

This presentation celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the release of The Yellow Shark, the iconic live concert album produced by Frank Zappa and commissioned and performed by the Ensemble Modern for Frankfurt Festival 1992. Zappa described this collaboration as one of the more fulfilling projects of his career and among the best representations of these orchestral works. The performance takes place on March 10 at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall, conducted by Jim Setapin. For more detailed information visit www.musicinst.org.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic has just announced it will present the world premiere of Zappa’s 200 MOTELS on October 23, 2013, signaling the 10th anniversary to the day of the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. "I believe in my heart of hearts that someone on the board [of the Philharmonic] said it's about time," Gail Zappa said. "This music was written before our youngest children were even conceived and they have never had a chance to hear this music in a proper concert hall."

200 MOTELS – as written for the film released in 1971 –  is scored for full orchestra and chorus, soprano soloist, narrator, and various featured voices.  After the Los Angeles premiere, the BBC Concert Orchestra will perform 200 MOTELS on Oct. 29 at London’s Royal Festival Hall with Jurjen Hempel conducting.  (Note: The original concert performance scheduled in 1970 was banned and subsequently cancelled by The Royal Albert Hall.)
