Michael Tippett’s <em>The Midsummer Marriage</em> at Boston Modern Orchestra Project

Gil Rose and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project are proud to present the New England premiere of Michael Tippett’s three act opera The Midsummer Marriage in concert at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, November 10. Premiered in 1955 at London’s Royal Opera House, Tippett’s opera is a nod to both Shakespeare and Mozart and is modeled after The Magic Flute following the path to marriage of both a royal and common couple. Tippett wrote of his opera:

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the supernatural world of the fairies and the natural, if fantastic, world of the mortals get entangled in such a way as to give us marvelous entertainment in this genre. The midsummer of the Dream is, at a far remove, the midsummer of The Midsummer Marriage… The word marriage in my title can only mean one thing: comedy. For there is only one comic plot: the unexpected hindrances to an eventual marriage.


In Tippett's enchanting opera, we are witness to a magical comedy in which two separated lovers are eventually united by supernatural means. BMOP presents The Midsummer Marriage in Boston on November 10 featuring sopranos Sara Heaton and Deborah Selig, mezzo-sopranos Joyce Castle and Lynn Torgove, tenors Julius Ahn and Matthew DiBattista and baritones David Kravitz and Robert Honeysucker.
