Matthias Pintscher Leads West Coast Premiere of <em>Bereshit</em> at Music Academy of the West, <em>Chute d'Etoiles</em> at Grand Teton Music Festival

Matthias Pintscher’s festival travels this summer take him to Santa Barbara and Jackson (WY) to conduct performances of his recent orchestral works Bereshit and Chute d’Etoiles, respectively. On July 1, Pintscher conducts the west coast premiere of Bereshit at the Music Academy of the West, Santa Barbara's renowned classical music school and festival. Commissioned by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the work received its world premiere on May 24 at the Ordway Center, led by the composer. Pintscher calls Bereshit (Hebrew for “in beginning”), “a very organic piece… a beginning from absolute darkness and shapelessness.” The work is meant to reflect on the act of creation as a turning point, the process of perception and one’s development of awareness. Pintscher describes this reflection, “as if you woke up in the pitch darkness of night in a strange room and only realized after a few seconds where you were… you attempt to make out the shapes of the space. Bereshit emerges from an initial sound as if from an absolute nothing, from a sound which subsides into percussive noises, from which elements then disentangle themselves and condense.”

Pintscher’s next stop is the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson, WY, where he conducts two performances of his Chute d’Etoiles on July 19 and 20. Composed for two trumpets and orchestra, Chute d’Etoiles (“Falling Stars”) was the 6th Roche Commission and premiered in August of 2012 at the Lucerne Festival with The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. Chute d’Etoiles takes its title from a work by German artist Anselm Kiefer that depicts seven houses and three sculptures as a meditation on humanity’s divine connection with the cosmos. Pintscher musically translates the artist’s vision, explaining, “we are made up of elements of the cosmos. And so we carry within ourselves the infinitely large as well as the infinitely small.” The performance at the Grand Teton Music Festival features trumpet players Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer.
