Lee Hoiby's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra In World Premiere at Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State University, of Clarksville, TN, had a special relationship with Lee Hoiby. In 2007, Hoiby served a two-week composer residency during which the university presented the world premiere of his band piece American Parade. Afterward, APSU faculty continued a close friendship with the composer and three years later, APSU commissioned and premiered Hoiby’s Prayer and Procession, a triple concerto for flute, clarinet, English horn and wind ensemble. On April 23, APSU honors Hoiby again when they host the Gateway Chamber Orchestra’s world premiere of the composer’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. Written in 1994, the 18-minute work features soloist (and APSU faculty member) Lisa Vanarsdel conducted by Gregory Wolynec.

In other Hoiby news this month, conductor Richard Rotz leads the Mercersburg Community Chorus and Orchestra (PA) in performances of For You, O Democracy on April 14 and 15; and the Kensington Symphony with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley Chorale performs Hymn to the New Age, directed by Geoffrey Gallegos on April 21.
