Komische Oper Berlin Presents Weill Festival

The Komische Oper Berlin celebrates Kurt Weill in a weeklong festival, January 18-24. Kicking off with a concert performance of the rarely performed satirical operetta Der Kuhhandel (January 18, 22), “Kurt Weill Week” proceeds with a series of talks and concerts, and features revivals of two stage works, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (January 19) and Die sieben Todsünden (January 21, 23; starring Dagmar Manzel). Three other concert evenings will highlight Mahagonny Songspiel and Music from the Threepenny Opera (January 19); Das Berliner Requiem, Kleine Dreigroschenmusik, and the Violin Concerto (January 24); and songs performed by Ute Lemper (January 20).

Other prominent Weill events taking place in Europe over the next months include The Opera Group's award-winning production of Street Scene(John Fulljames, director; Tim Murray, conductor) at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (January 15 – 31) and Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu (March 1-5). In Brussels, Ian Bostridge performs Weill’s Four Walt Whitman Songs at La Monnaie (January 23), with Julius Drake on piano.

Closer to home, conductor James Holmes and soprano Lisa Vroman headline a concert titled “Kurt Weill: Berlin, Paris, New York,” given by the Symphony Silicon Valley in San Jose (January 12-13). The program features Kleine Dreigroschenmusik, Die sieben Todsünden, and a medley of Weill's Broadway songs. The popular Kleine Dreigroschenmusik—Weill’s suite from The Threepenny Opera arranged for wind orchestra—will be played again on January 20, this time by the Omaha Symphony, led by Thomas Wilkins.
