Two New York Premieres for Pierre Jalbert

On June 3, Music from Copland House -- the resident performing ensemble of the nationally celebrated and historic Copland House – presents the New York premiere of Pierre Jalbert’s Klang, an exuberant work for two pianos and percussion. Executive and Artistic Director Michael Boriskin will be joined on the keyboards by Michael Barrett, General Director of the Caramoor Center and International Music Festival, along with percussionists Kory Grossman and Andrew Stenvall. The season finale takes place at the picturesque Merestead Estate, with Jalbert in attendance where he’ll also participate in a post-concert Q& A. Later in the week, Music from Copland House goes into the studio to record the work for a forthcoming all-Jalbert portrait disc.

Jalbert, a former Copland House Resident himself, shares some thoughts about his work:

Klang was written specifically for the Quattro Mani piano duo along with percussionist David Colson.  The title refers to the German word klang, which simply means tone or sound. Throughout the work, the two pianos trade off playing bell tones, which reverberate to form more complex harmonies. These are also colored with various percussion timbres. Though [written] in one continuous movement, the piece contains three sections, with the outer sections containing more pulse-oriented, motoric rhythms and the middle section providing a lyrical contrast.

The next day, on June 4, Jalbert’s work Les espaces infinis receives its New York premiere by the Orchestra of the League of Composers in its final concert of the season, led by guest conductor James Baker. The concert takes place at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre and will be guest-hosted by John Schaefer, music writer and curator of WNYC’s "New Sounds" and “Soundcheck” programs.
