Jörg Widmann Featured at 92Y “Contrasts” Concert Series

The 92Y “Contrasts” series continues this month in New York with three programs featuring Jörg Widmann, Alexander Lonquich and Christian Tetzlaff among others. Jörg Widmann appears as composer and clarinetist on all three programs with his 24 Duos for Violin and Cello, Nachtstück, and Fantasie programmed throughout the concert series that aims to explore the idea of contrasts within musical history, perception and practice. Widmann performs alongside violinist Christian Tetzlaff, cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, and pianists Alexander Lonquich and Cristina Barbuti.

Widmann’s chamber music seeks to discover each instrument’s range of sound by utilizing an array of styles and techniques to create carefully crafted harmonies. Duos for violin and cello presents a series of 24 impressionable works, each with its own detailing of Widmann’s exploration through the realms of timbre and rhythm. These tools of expression are also revealed in his pieces Fantasie and Nachtstück, a trio for clarinet, cello and piano. Program note annotator Christopher Cerrone writes on Nachtstück:

Throughout the work, Widmann takes special care to blend and transform the timbres of instruments seamlessly, often by alternating vibrato and non-vibrato playing styles to hide and reveal which instrument is playing what sounds. Sudden interruptions in the piano and clarinet keep the tension high, and the mood throughout is sinister. As the piece develops it becomes dominated by violent tremolandi in the cello, high trills in the clarinet and swoops inside the piano before an obsessive ostinato in the piano closes the piece.

“Contrasts” at 92Y takes place April 16, 18 and 20 at Kaufmann Concert Hall in New York City. For more detailed information about the performances visit www.92y.org.
