Alban Berg’s <em>7 frühe Lieder</em> Heard Anew

The Kingston Philharmonia (UK), under the baton of conductor Levon Parikian, recently presented the world premiere of Alban Berg's 7 frühe Lieder in its new arrangement for medium voice and orchestra by Heinz Stolba. Composed in 1907 while the composer was studying under the tutelage of Arnold Schönberg, Berg’s 7 frühe Lieder (Seven Early Songs) carry a strong heritage of the works of Richard Strauss and Claude Debussy. The songs were originally written for voice and piano, and subsequently arranged for voice and orchestra by the composer. In 2008, Heinz Stolba completed a new orchestration of these songs using a smaller orchestra than Berg’s.
