Morton Subotnick Celebrates 80!

A heroic pioneer in the field of electronic music and multi-media performance, Subotnick has long been firmly planted on the vanguard of our musical culture's march into the 21st century and is directly responsible for many of the advancements in music technology that are common today. As active as ever as he enters his ninth decade, the composer is still highly sought after for his stunning live performances.

Prolific throughout his career as both a performer and composer, Subotnick has written works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, and theater and multimedia productions. Subotnick’s Silver Apples of the Moon, composed in 1967 for electronic music synthesizer, is one of only 300 recordings to have been entered into the National Registry of Recorded Works at the Library of Congress.

Subotnick continually brings his excellence in teaching and musical innovation to institutions throughout the US. With Ramon Sender, Subotnick co-founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center and along with Mel Powell, is responsible for the creation of the California Institute of the Arts. His dedication to music education has resulted in a series of six musical software programs for children, an elementary music curriculum, and a children’s website as well as his recent award-winning “Pitch Painter” app for iPad. Subotnick is currently developing an innovative multi dimensional ear training and music creativity online curriculum to be included as an integral component of Music Sales' recently launched digital music education division, MusicFirst. Intended as a K - 6 curriculum, Subotnick's new education program serves as the culmination of the composer's 30 years of work and development in the field of digital music education.

Several performances and events are lined up this year and beyond in celebration of Subotnick’s birthday. Many of these honorary events are planned in his native New York City, including: a birthday celebration at the Greenwich House Music School in the West Village on April 15; a performance of Subotnick’s Trembling, Axolotl and Falling Leaves,each for live instruments and “electronic ghost score,” by violinist Jenny Lin with Subotnick on April 11 at CUNY Brooklyn, followed by a guest lecture and demo led by Subotnick; his monodrama Jacob’s Room at The Juilliard School on October 11; and an 80th Birthday Gala at New York University, October 28. Also in the Fall of 2013, Subotnick embarks on a tour with video artist Lillevan with stops at New York City’s Roulette, University of Washington in Seattle, REDCAT in Los Angeles, Cleveland's Museum of Art and Museum of Contemporary Art, St. Louis, Uzbekistan and TodaysArt festival in The Hague, Netherlands, September 27 and 28.
