György Ligeti 90th Birthday Anniversary

May 28, 2013 marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of György Ligeti, one of contemporary music’s most celebrated and influential voices. In honor of the anniversary, several dedicated performances are scheduled across the world as well as many newly released recordings and materials.

Throughout 2013, Schott Music is issuing several new editions of Ligeti’s music. Recently edited performance materials as well as conducting and choral scores will soon be available for Clocks and Clouds, in addition to a new score of Melodien, a study score of San Francisco Polyphony, and piano reductions of the Violin Concerto and the Hamburg Concerto for horn and orchestra. WERGO has also released the new recording – Volumina - Works for Organ – which features Ligeti’s complete organ works performed by Dominik Susteck. The recording includes Ligeti’s three works for solo organ (Volumina and the Harmonies and Coulée etudes), as well as a new arrangement by Susteck of Musica ricercata, originally composed for pianoforte.

The SONAR New Music Ensemble celebrates the work of Ligeti on May 3 with an all-Ligeti program at Grace and St. Peter’s in Baltimore. The concert includes performances of Ramifications for 12 solo strings, Sonata for solo cello, Six Bagatelles for wind quintet, Etudes for solo piano, and Mysteries of the Macabre with soprano Lisa Perry. Also this month, the Komische Oper Berlin continues its run of the Barrie Kosky production of Le Grand Macabre. The cast features Eir Inderhaug as Venus/Gepopo along with Chris Merritt, Julia Giebel, Annelie Sophie Müller and Andrew Watts and is led by Maestro Baldur Brönnimann.

Additional performances this month include Ligeti’s Lontano for large orchestra on May 3 with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Melodien on May 16 with Jonathan Nott leading the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, and Barbara Hannigan joins Simon Rattle and The Philadelphia Orchestra for several performances of Mysteries of the Macabre in Philadelphia and at Carnegie Hall, May 16-19.
