On October 10, Haas is the subject of Miller Theatre’s Composer Portraits series. Under the baton of Brad Lubman, New York-based Ensemble Signal performs a selection of Haas’s chamber works including ATTHIS, featuring soprano Rachel Calloway, as well as Tria ex uno, for sextet, and de terrae fine, for solo violin, performed by Olivia De Prato. ATTHIS, for soprano and eight instruments, received its US premiere in July by Michel Galante and the Argento Ensemble. Galante writes of ATTHIS:

In this 40-minute work, Haas sets Sappho’s erotic love poetry against the background of the instrumental combination of Franz Schubert’s Octet: string quintet, horn, clarinet, and bassoon. Whereas Haas’s focus on the lyric impulse harkens back to the Austrian tradition of the Schubertian lieder, his focus on musical innovation follows the tradition of modernist composers of the Second Viennese School.

Georg Friedrich Haas began his tenure this year as newly appointed composition faculty at Columbia University. Haas is widely regarded as one of the leading composers in modern music today; in addition to this prestigious academic appointment, he recently garnered the Grand Austrian National Prize in 2007, the SWR Symphony Orchestra Composition Prize in 2010 (for his piece limited approximations), a composer residency at the Lucerne Festival in 2011, and the 2013 Salzburg Music Prize.
