Georg Friedrich Haas Composer-in-Residence at the Lucerne Festival

Georg Friedrich Haas is featured as Composer-in-Residence at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, where nine of his works are performed, including the world premiere of his String Quartet No.7 and the premiere of a new production of his second chamber opera, Nacht. The new string quartet was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival for the Arditti Quartet and was premiered by the Arditti Quartet on September 10.

Haas’ second chamber opera, Nacht, is presented in a new co-production by the University of Music Basel and Gare du Nord. The new production premieres on September 16, with performances throughout the Lucerne Festival and at the Gare du Nord on October 20 and 24. Nacht is performed by Ensemble DIAGONAL, the contemporary music ensemble of the University of Music Basel, conducted by Jürg Henneberger. Nacht takes as its textual basis the works of Friedrich Hölderlin. Haas comments:

The concept of ‘night’ for me is associated not with romanticizing notions but with the loss of reality and hopelessness, with an intellectual ‘benighting,’ with the loss of utopias. As Hölderin wrote in Hyperion: ‘There is a silencing, a forgetting of all existence, where we are, as if we had lost everything, a night of our soul, where no glimmer of a star nor even the fire of a rotting log gives us light.
