For the past 75 years, week after week, all across the globe, choristers young and old, soloists and orchestral musicians, professionals and amateurs alike, all have come together to perform Carl Orff’s thrilling Carmina Burana, a work which puts great demands on each and every performer. Rhythmically and melodically complex, requiring great precision, with texts in Middle High German and Medieval Latin by anonymous poets from the eleventh to the twelfth centuries, this work seems at first glance to have little in common with the everyday life of its performers and audiences. Yet, the powerful spoken rhythms of the medieval verses and Carl Orff’s life-affirming music address a universal outlook on life, transcending all cultural, gender, and age-related barriers to unite individuals in a common experience of joy, love, pain, birth, and death. Carmina Burana is an unsurpassed musical gift to the whole world. Here’s to the next 75 years!
