Canadian Premiere of Matthew Hindson's Maralinga with Lara St. John and Sinfonia Toronto
Oct. 02, 2013

Sinfonia Toronto and violinist Lara St. John combine forces for the Canadian premiere of Matthew Hindson’s Maralinga. The piece, composed in 2011 and scored for string orchestra and solo violin, receives its premiere at the Toronto Centre for the Arts on October 26. St. John, described as “a high-powered soloist” by the New York Times, has worked with Hindson in the past, notably as soloist in the 2008 recording of his Concerto for Violin (Australian Postcards).
Maralinga, an area in the remote Western region of South Australia, was the home of the aboriginal Maralinga Tjarutja people as well as the site of secret British nuclear tests. Hindson remarks:
Secret nuclear testing was conducted in the South Australian desert, at Maralinga and Emu Creek between 1953-1963. Tests included some very nasty experiments with kilograms of plutonium, which subsequently contaminated the test site. Unfortunately, according to a subsequent Royal Commission into the tests, it seems that the welfare of the aboriginal inhabitants and the Australian service personnel at the test sites was never taken into account. Australian military personnel were used as unwitting guinea pigs into the effects of radiation from these experiments. Maralinga was officially cleaned up by the year 2000, but the site and its history remains a stain upon Australia’s historical record. This piece makes reference to the long Aboriginal history at Maralinga as well as more recent events and attitudes.
On November 1st, flutist Alexa Still and The Oberlin Orchestra perform and record Hindson’s flute concerto, House Music, under the baton of Raphael Jiménez. The performance takes place at Finney Chapel in Oberlin, Ohio and will be available to stream on a live webcast.
