Boston Modern Orchestra Project Debuts Andrew Norman’s Play

Fresh off his most recent premiere with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Andrew Norman switches coasts this month for the world premiere of his newest orchestral work for the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), conducted by Gil Rose. On May 17, BMOP premieres Play, a new work for orchestra commissioned as part of Andrew Norman’s Music Alive residency, a program of Meet the Composer and the League of American Orchestras. Norman writes:

The word ‘play’ has many meanings, and I engaged with many of them while writing this piece. On one level, I am fascinated by how instruments are played, and how the physical act of playing an instrument becomes theater when we foreground it on stage in an orchestra concert. I’m also fascinated by how the orchestra, as a meta-instrument, is played, how its many moving parts can play with or against or apart from one another. While the word ‘play’ certainly connotes fun and whimsy, it can also hint at a darker side of interpersonal relationships, at manipulation, deceit, and the many layers of master-and-marionette dynamics that one could possibly extrapolate from the composer-conductor-orchestra-audience chain of communication.

The Philadelphia Orchestra performs Norman’s impetuous and captivating orchestral work Unstuck in three concerts led by Sir Simon Rattle, May 9 through 11 at Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall. For more detailed concert information, visit www.philorch.org.
