Bernard Rands at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and New CD on Bridge Records

On December 19, Christoph Eschenbach and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra join in the celebrations of Bernard Rands's 80th birthday year season with a performance of …where the murmurs die... . The work, composed in 1995, was a commission from the New York Philharmonic and given its premiere by the orchestra in that year under the direction of Leonard Slatkin. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's program, repeated on December 20 and 21, also includes works by Beethoven and Bruckner.

Bernard Rands's 80th birthday season celebrations continue with the release on Bridge Records of a landmark new recording of the composer's piano music, featuring virtuosic performances by pianists Robert Levin and Ursula Oppens. The new recording includes a wide range of piano works spanning fifty years of Rands's compositional life between 1960 and 2010. In addition to the monumental set of twelve Preludes for solo piano which Robert Levin premiered at the Ruhr International Piano Festival in 2007, repertoire on the new CD includes Tre Espressioni, Espressione IV, Memo V, and Impomptu. On December 5, New York’s Symphony Space hosts a CD release concert, with performances of selected works from the CD and a discussion with the composer and pianists moderated by Symphony Space Artistic Director Laura Kaminsky.
