Bernard Rands In Concert at the Charleston Symphony

On November 2, the Charleston Symphony and the College of Charleston presented Bernard Rands’ "now again"-fragments from Sappho in its South Carolina premiere. Featured as part of the orchestra’s “Echoes of Antiquity” program, a contemporary music retrospective, Yiorgos Vassilandonakis conducted the program, joined by soprano Deanna McBroom.

Composed in 2006, the 17-minute work is based on the classic texts of Sappho scored for solo mezzo-soprano, winds, strings, percussion and additional soprano and alto voice. “now again” was written for The Serge Koussevitzky Foundation in The Library of Congress, and is dedicated to the memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. The work was premiered in Philadelphia in 2006 by the Network for New Music.

The Chicago Classical Review wrote:

The score is less a dramatic song cycle than a reflective meditation, painting a spare, melismatic evocation of the broken, elliptical texts. Yet Rands’s luminous music is constantly compelling and ear-catching, lyrical yet cast with neo-Classical restraint.
