Bernard Rands’ <em>Danza Petrificada</em> At Carnegie Hall

Ronald Zollman and the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic had the honor of presenting the New York premiere of Bernard Rands’ Danza Petrificada at Carnegie Hall on April 2. Written for Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and premiered in May of 2011 to celebrate Maestro Muti's inaugural season as music director, Danza Petrificada pays tribute to the 200th anniversary of the start of Mexico’s War of Independence and takes its title from a beautiful poem by Octavio Paz. Lawrence A. Johnson writes on the premiere in the Chicago Classical Review online:

Rands' piece is more edgy and impressionistic than sunny homage, a moody tone poem with passing Mexican elements, glimpsed as if through a refracted lens. Danza Petrificada is that rare work that manages to be both intelligent and individual, while also serving its functional purpose as a lively, audience-friendly, nine-minute curtain-raiser—even with the abrupt coda.

Other Rands activities this month include the Steans Institute Quartet’s continuing tour of Rands’ breathtaking String Quartet No. 2 with performances at Merkin Concert Hall in New York on April 3, The Loft in Chicago on April 6 and at Ravinia on April 7.
