Bernard Rands's <em>Concertino</em> & <em>Ceremonial</em> in Performances in Oberlin, Rochester, and Toronto

In anticipation of the composer's 80th birthday year in 2014, performances of Bernard Rands’s music continue to dot this season’s calendar around the country. This month Timothy Weiss leads the Oberlin Sinfonietta in a performance of Rands Concertino for oboe and ensemble, featuring Oberlin faculty soloist Robert Walters, and the University of Rochester Wind Symphony presents Rands’ Ceremonial under the direction of Mark Davis Scatterday, first on May 1 in Rochester, then as part of Toronto’s Canadafest on May 16. 

Commissioned by the Network for New Music in Philadelphia, Concertino unfolds in one continues movement segmented into two formal sections: the first a fast, complex and virtuosic development of material presented in an opening cadenza; the second comprised of alternating slower, lyrical and progressively faster, dramatic material.

The performance of Rands’ Ceremonial in Rochester marks the seventh performance of the wind ensemble work this year alone. Ceremonial is a fascinating exploration of the multiple combinations of wind instruments and resulting colors possible within the wind band context. A single melodic theme is repeated ten times throughout the course of the work subsequently played by different combinations of instruments, always increasing in density and in complexity of timbre.
