Andrew Norman Named Opera Philadelphia Composer-in-Residence

Our own Andrew Norman joins Opera Philadelphia in its renowned Composer-in-Residence program. Sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the residency is a professional development program that “fosters tomorrow’s American operatic masterpieces through personalized creative development and intensive, hands-on composition opportunities.”

Chosen from over 100 applicants, Norman is the third participant in the program, joining composers Lembit Beecher and Missy Mazzoli. The Composer-in-Residence program operates in collaboration with the Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theatre Group in New York.

David B. Devan, Opera Philadelphia’s general director and president, comments:

Andrew’s music really stood out both in its emotional sophistication and his virtuosic control of larger forms. Both of these qualities are essential for composing opera. We look forward to working with Andrew as he takes this next step in his growth as an artist.

Of the residency, Norman states:

I am very excited and honored to be the next composer-in-residence with these three innovative companies. I love opera, both new and old, but I have much to learn about the nuts and bolts of how it gets made. This residency, with its opportunities for experimentation and immersion, comes at the perfect time for me as I dive into my first large-scale opera project.

As part of his residency, Andrew Norman will study Gotham Chamber Opera’s upcoming production of Toshio Hosokawa’s The Raven as well as Opera Philadelphia’s production of Ricky Ian Gordon’s A Coffin in Egypt. Norman, who recently joined the composition faculty at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, continues his residency this year with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
