Kamran Ince’s <em>Domes</em> at the Albany Symphony Orchestra

Kamran Ince’s Domes, one of the composer’s most powerful and absorbing orchestral compositions, was a centerpiece of the Albany Symphony Orchestra's recent American Music Festival concerts, conducted by David Alan Miller. Domes premiered in 1993 and was a a commission from the California Symphony. Ince wrote the work during his yearlong residency in Rome, and the work was inspired in particular by his experience on a rooftop taking in awe-inspiring views of the many specatacular domes throughout the city. Ince acknowledges the religious significance of the architectural dome in this piece to evoke an air of spirituality while incorporating an aspect of nostalgia as the work reflects on the composer's life experience in both Christianity and Islam.

Ince on Domes:

Domes is very slow and washes the listener in string sounds with other instruments providing a touch of accompaniment. An organically inter-related nocturne of dipping suspension bridge design, the mood throughout is of spiritual obsessiveness, constantly descending lines searching for something, trying to feel what they are searching for, to seek out what they are feeling-rather like whirling Sufi Dervishes.
