2012 BBC Proms Features Boulez, Knussen, Benjamin, Harvey & Bryars

The BBC Proms, one of the world’s most exciting and extensive classical music festivals, features a large array of Schott/EAM composers for their 2012 season. The historic festival, now in its 118th year, takes place at the Royal Albert Hall in London with over 70 concerts from July 13 through September 8.

Pierre Boulez will be featured prominently with performances of several of his works between July 20 and 26 including Dérive 2 and Mémoriale (‘...explosante-fixe...’ Originel) with Daniel Barenboim leading the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Dialogue de l’ombre double with clarinetist Jussef Eisa, Messagesquisse with cellist Hassan Moataz El Molla, Anthèmes 2 with violinist Michael Barenboim, and Le marteau sans maître with Boulez conducting.

Oliver Knussen also receives several key performances this year with the BBC Symphony Orchestra playing his Symphony No. 2 led by Gianandrea Noseda with soprano Gillian Keith, as well as his Symphony No. 3. led by the composer himself. Additional works include Ophelia Dances played by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Ophelia’s Last Dance with pianist Huw Watkins.

Several other notable Proms performances include George Benjamin’s Altitude and the world premiere of Gavin Bryars’ BBC commissioned work, After the Underworlds, with Bramwell Tovey leading the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. A performance of Schönberg’s spectacular Gurrelieder on August 12 will be led by Jiří Bělohlávek and on August 14, the 2012 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award winner Jonathan Harvey will receive a late night performance of his haunting electronic work Mortuos plango, vivos voco.
