2007/08 Season Overview

The 2007/08 season is underway and there are a lot of events to look forward to. Below is a sampling of this season's featured events from the EAM calendar, including world premiere works by Henri Dutilleux, Alvin Singleton, Joseph Schwantner and Lee Hoiby; new recordings of the music of Tobias Picker and Valentin Silvestrov; and special multimedia events at Carnegie Hall and by the Orchestra of St. Luke's.

Alvin Singleton

  • World premiere of a new work for Imani Winds commissioned by the ASCAP Foundation and Spivey Hall, Clayton State University. Premiere performance to take place at Spivey Hall, February 8, 2008, Morrow, GA, with futher performances TBA.

Henri Dutilleux

  • U.S. Premiere of Le temps l'horloge commissioned by the Saito Kinen Festival, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Radio France. Performances by the BSO conducted by James Levine with soprano Renée Fleming will take place on November 29 through December 1, 2007.

Tobias Picker

  • Appointed as Artistic Advisor to New York's Dicapo Opera Theatre, beginning with the 2007/08 season. Please see full story within this newsletter for further details.
  • Scenes and arias from selected Picker operas at Dicapo, February 8, 2008.
  • Songs and Arias performed by Kirsten Chavez at Dicapo as a preview to the upcoming Koch Classics recording of the same works.
  • Ursula Oppens performs all Picker solo piano works for a new recording on the Wergo label, scheduled for release in 2008.

Joseph Schwantner

  • World premiere of Silver Halo of the Moon commissioned by the ensemble Flute Force at Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall, January 17, 2008.
  • New Publication: Velocites for solo marimba now available for purchase in new engraving with revisions, Schott ED 30002.

Robert Beaser

  • World premiere of new work commissioned by the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Federico Cortese. Performance at Symphony Hall, June 15, 2008, Boston MA.

Jörg Widmann

  • World Premiere of new solo piano work written for Yefim Bronfman commissioned by the Carnegie Hall Corporation. Performance at Carnegie Hall, December 17, 2007.

Lee Hoiby

  • Composer in Residence at Austin Peay State University. Includes world premiere of a new band work on February 25, 2008 and a full concert of Hoiby works as well as student recitals and master classes, March 18 through 30, 2008.
  • American Opera Projects presents the world professional premiere of Hoiby's opera This is the Rill Speaking, at SUNY Purchase, NY, April 26, 2008.
  • New Publication: Last Letter Home, octavo for TBB chorus a cappella now available for purchase, ED 30013.

Luciano Berio

  • A-ronne performed by vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, October 25, 2007.
  • Sinfonia performed by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel with vocal ensemble Synergy Vocals, January 30 through February 2, 2008.
  • "Day of Berio": Complete Sequenzas performed by members of the New York Philharmonic, February 2, 2008.
  • Pianist Francesco Tristano Schlimé performs Berio's Cinque variazioni and Wasserklavier at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, February 1, 2008.
  • Quatre dédicaces: Fanfare; Entrate; Festum; Encore performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pierre Boulez at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium, February 26, 2008.
  • Folk Songs performed by the New York Philharmonic with soprano Audra McDonald, conducted by Alan Gilbert, March 5 through 8, 2008.
  • Rendering (Schubert/Berio) performed by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by David Robertson, May 29 through 31, 2008.

Johannes Maria Staud

  • Composer-in-residence at The Cleveland Orchestra. Includes U.S. Premiere of Apeiron and commissioning of new work for premiere during the 2008/09 season.

Krzysztof Penderecki

  • World Premiere of the revision of the "Resurrection" Piano Concerto by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra with Penderecki conducting, December 7 and 9, 2007.

Valentin Silvestrov

  • New recordings of Symphony No. 6 and Bagatellen und Serenaden by ECM New Series. The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra performs his Symphony No. 6 and the Münchener Kammerorchester performs on Bagatellen und Serenaden. Both albums set for release November, 2007.

Kurt Weill

  • HK Gruber conducts the Zankel Band through "Berlin im Licht", "Ölmusik", "Morgenchoral des Peachum" from The Threepenny Opera, "Lied von der Unzulänglichkeit menschlichen Strebens" from The Threepenny Opera, "Klops Lied", and Little Threepenny Music as part ofCarnegie Hall's program "Berlin in Lights", November 8, 2007.

Peteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, Toru Takemitsu

  • The Orchestra of St. Luke's presents a program featuring the works of these composers as part of their multimedia program In the Grace of the World to take place at the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ. Peteris Vasks in pre-concert talk, October 6, 2007.

Richard Rodney Bennett

  • All the King's Men at Opera Omaha January 24 through 27, 2008.

Dame Ethel Smyth

  • The Wreckers U.S. Premiere by the American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leon Botstein with the Concert Chorale of New York, Avery Fisher Hall, September 30, 2007.
