150th Birthday of Richard Strauss; World Premiere of Overture in a minor

On June 11, the music world celebrates the 150th anniversary of composer Richard Strauss, a defining voice in late 19th-century and early 20th-century music. Many performances take place worldwide in honor of the occasion, including the world premiere of Strauss’s early Overture in a minor. The performance takes place on June 18 at the Richard Strauss Festival, with Ulf Schirmer conducting the Munchner Rundfunkorchester.

Written when Strauss was 15 years old, the overture was a present to his composition teacher Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer in celebration of Meyer’s 25 years of service as kapellmeister in Munich. Also featured on the program is the composer’s Overture in c minor. These early works offer a glimpse into Strauss’s early process and developing voice as well as an opportunity for listeners to hear “new music” from the beloved and celebrated composer.
