| Composer note | For a Lost Stone was written for and dedicated to the Odd Appetite Duo. I have always loved stones, and have composed a few pieces using them as instruments. In preparing for this composition, Nathan Davis and Hayang Kim showed me their collection of rock instruments---stone plates salvaged from a river nearby their Vermont residence. For me, the stones are magical: It requires only the touch of our hands to "resurrect" the sounds embodied in them. When they sing, all others hush to listen. When I was finishing the piece in December 2002, just before Hayang and Nathan's European tour, I heard the sad news that one of their most beloved rocks was broken during travel. This composition is thus written in memory of this ageless friend. |
