| Composer note | Ordinary Matter combines patterns of prime number groupings, exploring the balance between repetition and unpredictability, like a playful machine. • Dashed slur lines clarify groupings of repeated patterns, but do not necessarily indicate phrasing. • Pedal markings should be taken as strong guides for phrasing and structural blurring vs. clarity of the material. Though I’ve taken care to consider the pedal markings as written, musical interpretation should always take precedent over notational precision. • Piano player 2 needs a coin with which to scrape piano strings. • All inside piano techniques are notated and described as they first appear in the score. – Katherine Balch |
