Lei Liang Wins the 2020 Grawemeyer Award

Lei Liang Wins the 2020 Grawemeyer Award

Schott Music New York is thrilled to announce that Lei Liang has been awarded the prestigious University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Music Composition for his large-scale orchestral work A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams. In two movements, A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams meditates on the loss of landscapes of cultural and spiritual dimensions. The work implies an intention to preserve and resurrect parallel landscapes - both spiritual and physical – and sustain a place where we and our children can belong.

Grawemeyer Award Director Marc Satterwhite remarks:

“Liang’s piece, which explores a huge range of emotions and ends with both hope and ambiguity, has a forceful, convincing arc and wonderful orchestral colors. Like some of our other winners, he challenges people inside and outside the field of music to ponder important things, even when it’s uncomfortable to do so.”

Schott Music has published Lei Liang’s music exclusively worldwide since 2011. Norman Ryan, Vice President for Composers & Repertoire at Schott Music New York, noted:

Lei Liang’s richly expressive compositional voice reflects the depth and diversity of human experience. In compositions such as “A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams” and countless others, Lei’s exquisite fusion of narrative, symbolic, and lyrical forms heightens our consciousness of the world around us and invites us to embrace a universal humanity. The entire team at Schott New York is deeply proud of Lei Liang and we heartily congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.

Boston Modern Orchestra Project/Gil Rose, conductor)

A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams was commissioned by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Artistic Director Gil Rose, and was made possible by a generous grant from the Jebediah Foundation New Music Commissions. It is dedicated to Robert Amory and to the memory of Jung Ying Tsao. The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) gave the world premiere performance of “A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams” on April 21, 2018.  BMOP subsequently released a recording of the piece on the BMOP Sound label.Gramophone said of this work, “Liang’s tonal and textural palettes become ever more exquisite, ranging from sonorities at the edge of silence in ‘Healing Rain Drops’ to full-orchestral might describing the shredding of landscapes. Liang’s Chinese-inflected sound world is never less than fascinating and always deeply involving.”
